Jim has always been very involved with his community, and has done much work for his own and neighboring towns, serving as the arborist for Newburgh, Montgomery, Walden, and Tuxedo Park. He is also the master horticulturist for Alumni Affairs at West Point.

For East Coldenham Elementary School, which Jim and his children attended, Jim planted a teardrop-shaped garden as a memorial to nine children who perished during a terrible storm there in 1989. He also helps plant trees on the grounds for retiring teachers.

In addition, Jim visits dozens of local elementary schools on Arbor Day (the last Friday in April) to talk with children about trees and the environment.
